Background of soil remediation in China

The soil is originally a natural shelter and purification site for various wastes, and the soil receiving pollutants did not mean that the soil was contaminated. Only when all kinds of pollutants in the soil are too much, exceeding the self purification capacity of the soil, and thus harmful effects on hygiene and epidemiology, indicate that the soil has been polluted. There are many reasons for soil pollution, such as industrial sludge, garbage, agriculture, sewage irrigation, settlement of pollutants in the atmosphere, heavy use of mineral fertilizers and pesticides containing heavy metals and so on.

China existing cultivated land has nearly 1/5 pollution of varying degrees. Pollution of soil will lead to crop reduction, and may even cause excessive pollutants in the agricultural products, thus endangering human health. In addition, with the acceleration of economic development and urbanization, site pollution caused by industrial and mining enterprises is also very serious. As the industrial structure and urban layout changes and adjustments, some chemical and metallurgical and other polluting enterprises have been relocated, coupled with the closure of some enterprises, pollution sites continue to produce. Soil is the important material basis of human society’s production activities, and it is indispensable and difficult to regenerate. Untreated contaminated sites will be time bomb, once the outbreak of a large area will cause immeasurable impact on the sustainable development of the country, it is necessary to pay great attention to soil pollution prevention and remediation of contaminated soil.
